Even with clear video evidence of a dangerous close pass, the Sheriff said there was nothing they could do.
This cyclist started recording after a terrifying incident in 2017 – and it happened again. Same danger, but this time, it was all on camera.
That’s why UpRide exists: to expose the risks, show the patterns, and hold dangerous drivers accountable.
When you add to UpRide, everyone benefits.

What happened prior to this incident and why do you record your ride?
I started using Cycliq cameras after my wife and I were rear-ended while cycling our tandem in 2017. A car approached from behind, laying on the horn the entire time. My wife told me we needed to get off the road as soon as possible. Within a quarter mile, we signaled a right turn – and as we did, the car swerved around us, still honking, and came dangerously close.
We stopped, shaken, and noticed the driver had pulled over a bit ahead. He started reversing towards us but then seemed to think twice and drove away. That incident made it clear: we needed to document our rides – for our safety and peace of mind.

When do you feel most vulnerable as a cyclist?
On roads without shoulders, especially when dealing with impatient or aggressive drivers.

What do you think are the most important things that can be done to improve safety for cyclists on the road?
We need better infrastructure – more space for bikes – and stricter enforcement of laws like Tennessee’s 3-foot passing rule. Awareness and accountability make all the difference.

Did you report your incident? What was the reporting process?
Yes, I went to the Sheriff’s office with the video footage within two hours of the incident. The response? I was told:
-
We should have called immediately.
-
We should carry a gun.
-
We shouldn’t ride on that road.
-
There was nothing they could do “after the fact.”
No official report was filed, and no action was taken. The officer was sympathetic, but in the end, it felt like we were left without support. It was incredibly frustrating.

What do you think about UpRide?
Wonderful resource.

What is your advice for other cyclists?
A calm, beautiful ride can turn dangerous in an instant. Always stay alert.
